Tajikistan head coach Goran Stevanovic says his team will go for a win in a crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifier against the Philippines, even though a draw would be enough to secure qualification, according to the Tajikistan Football Federation.

Speaking to the media in Dushanbe, the Serbian coach said his side are fully focused and well prepared for the decisive match.
“We have a very important match ahead. We are preparing thoroughly. The Philippines are a strong and difficult opponent for us. It is true that a draw would be enough, but playing for a draw is dangerous. That is why we are aiming only for a win,” Stevanovic said.
He also noted that several players were not called up because of injuries and a lack of match fitness. At the same time, he said the coaching staff continues to monitor all candidates and that the national team remains open to them.
Earlier, the omission of defender Vahdat Hanonov from the squad triggered a backlash among fans. The 25-year-old initially announced his retirement from international football, but later released a video message backing his teammates.
Stevanovic took charge of Tajikistan last autumn and has led the team to three wins in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Going into the final round, Tajikistan top the group and are ahead of the Philippines on tie-breakers. The hosts only need to avoid defeat on March 31 to qualify for the tournament.
Stevanovic’s contract also expires after the match against the Philippines. It remains unclear whether it will be extended, even in the event of a successful result.
