Barcelona academy coach Muslimov: “Khusanov would adapt in Catalonia — he already fits Guardiola’s model”

Rafael Muslimov, a coach at the Barcelona academy in Manas, believes Abdukodir Khusanov has the qualities to fit the Catalan football model. In his view, the Uzbek defender’s adaptation under Pep Guardiola shows why he could also adapt to a Barcelona-style system.

Khusanov has become one of the most discussed Uzbek players in European football after earning praise from Guardiola for his pace, aggression and decision-making.

“Khusanov would adapt in Catalonia. He already fits Guardiola’s model. He has the qualities Pep values in defenders: speed, power, aggression, football intelligence and the ability to learn quickly. Guardiola knows his strong points and understands how to use them,” Muslimov told Eurasia Football.

According to Muslimov, Khusanov’s speed is especially important for a team that defends high and leaves space behind the back line.

“In this model, you need speed to cover, recover, fight for the ball and close open spaces. Khusanov has that. He does not just run fast — he uses his speed for interceptions, pressure and joining attacks,” Muslimov said.

Muslimov also highlighted Khusanov’s reading of the game and ability to absorb tactical instructions.

“For Guardiola, a defender has to understand the game: read attacks in advance, choose the right position and make decisions under pressure. If Pep says Khusanov is smart and learns quickly, it means he sees a player who can be developed within his model,” he added.

The coach believes Khusanov’s background outside the European academy system does not prevent him from fitting into Guardiola’s football.

“Of course, players who grow up in European academies may understand some principles earlier — positional play, structure, playing under pressure. But if a player has intelligence, discipline and the ability to absorb information quickly, he can adapt. Khusanov has that foundation,” Muslimov said.

For Muslimov, Khusanov’s value lies in the combination of physical qualities and coachability.

“Catalan football is not only about short passing. It is about structure, control of space, correct decisions and aggression after losing the ball. Khusanov can give those things through his strengths. That is why he suits this model and can become even more important,” Muslimov said.
