From Chelsea to Burnley under No.12: Dastan Satpayev follows Bashir Humphreys’ path

Dastan Satpayev is ready for his first season in English football. After turning 18, the Kazakhstan international officially joined Chelsea and was immediately sent on a season-long loan to Burnley.

Chelsea had agreed a deal with Kairat for Satpayev back in February 2025, but the forward could only complete the move after reaching adulthood. His contract with the London club runs until 2033, while the Burnley loan does not include an option to buy.

The destination was not always obvious. Strasbourg had repeatedly been mentioned as a possible next step, while there were also reports that Satpayev could return to Kairat for another spell.

Burnley may ultimately prove more useful for his development than either option.

Why Burnley makes sense

A return to Kairat would have guaranteed Satpayev regular football in familiar surroundings. It would also have delayed the most difficult part of his move to Chelsea — adapting to England.

Strasbourg offered a different attraction. The Ligue 1 club is part of the same BlueCo ownership structure as Chelsea and has already been used to give young players connected with the London side regular first-team football.

Burnley gives Satpayev something neither option could offer: an immediate introduction to English football without the pressure of trying to break straight into Chelsea’s first team.

The Championship will be a serious test. There are 46 league matches, a demanding schedule and a much more physical style of football than Satpayev has been used to in Kazakhstan.

That is exactly why the move makes sense.

At 18, Satpayev will have a full season to get used to English defenders, the pace of the game and life in the country where Chelsea hope he will eventually play.

Burnley should also provide opportunities. There is competition in attack, so nobody will hand Satpayev a place in the starting XI, but a long Championship season inevitably requires rotation. The Kazakh forward can also play in several attacking positions rather than only as a traditional No.9.

For Chelsea, meaningful minutes now appear far more valuable than keeping him around the first-team squad without a clear role.

He has already scored for Chelsea

Satpayev does not arrive at Turf Moor as a complete unknown to his parent club.

He spent pre-season with Chelsea and featured in four friendly matches during their tour of Australia and Asia. Against Western Sydney Wanderers, the Kazakh forward started and opened the scoring after only six minutes.

It was a friendly, but it still gave Satpayev his first goal in a Chelsea shirt before his competitive English career had even begun.

He also arrives with considerably more senior experience than most players of his age. Satpayev was already a first-team regular at Kairat, represented Kazakhstan at senior level and played in the Champions League against opponents including Real Madrid and Inter.

He has already experienced big nights and considerable pressure. What he has not experienced yet is the week-to-week intensity of English football.

Burnley will provide exactly that.

Burnley have already developed a Chelsea youngster

The most interesting comparison is Bashir Humphreys.

The defender arrived from Chelsea in the summer of 2024, when Burnley were also preparing for a season in the Championship. He was 21 and joined on loan after previous spells with Paderborn and Swansea.

Humphreys was handed the No.12 shirt.

He went on to make 28 appearances in all competitions as Burnley won promotion to the Premier League. His season was convincing enough for the club to make the move permanent, buying him from Chelsea for around €14 million before bonuses.

Ahead of the new campaign, Humphreys switched from No.12 to No.6.

Satpayev has inherited the number he left behind.

The parallel only goes so far. Humphreys is a defender and was three years older when he arrived at Turf Moor. But his example shows that Burnley are prepared to trust young players arriving from Chelsea if they prove they are good enough.

For Humphreys, a successful loan ended with a permanent move to Burnley.

Satpayev will be hoping for a different ending. His target is to have a season strong enough to make Chelsea want him back.

No.12 has served Burnley well

Humphreys is only the latest notable Burnley player to have worn the number Satpayev has now received.

Robbie Brady spent his entire Burnley career under No.12 after joining from Norwich City in January 2017. The Republic of Ireland international became an important player under Sean Dyche and was part of the side that finished seventh in the Premier League in 2017/18 and qualified for European competition.

Brady was also one of the leading players of his generation for Ireland. At Euro 2016, he scored the winner against Italy that sent his country into the knockout stage and then converted a penalty against France in the last 16.

Lyle Foster also began his Burnley career under No.12 after arriving from Westerlo in January 2023. The South African later changed numbers and developed into one of the club’s leading forwards.

Further back, goalkeeper Brian Jensen spent many years wearing No.12 and made more than 300 appearances for Burnley. He was part of the side that earned promotion to the Premier League in 2009 and famously saved Michael Carrick’s penalty in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

Now the number belongs to Satpayev.

At Kairat, he had already established himself as one of the brightest young players in Central Asian football. He has also managed to score in a Chelsea shirt.

Burnley is where the real test begins: whether one of Central Asia’s biggest talents is ready for the weekly demands of English football.
