The 2026 Turkmenistan Ýokary Liga season kicked off in early April. Eight clubs will compete in the country’s top division, with a combined squad value of just €3.4 million.

What makes the league stand out, however, is not its size or finances — but its structure. Turkmenistan’s top flight remains almost entirely closed to foreign players, yet its clubs still manage to compete on the continental stage.
Participants
Eight clubs are taking part in the 2026 season (in order of last season’s finish):
- Arkadag — Mergen Orazov / Vladimir Bayramov
- Ahal (Annau) — Eziz Annamuhammedov
- Altyn Asyr (Ashgabat) — Yazguly Hojageldiyev
- Shagadam (Turkmenbashi) — Maksat Shamyradov
- Nebitchi (Balkanabat) — Aleksandr Klimenko
- Ashgabat — Tofik Shukurov
- Kopetdag (Ashgabat) — Amangylych Kochumov
- Merv (Mary) — Rahmanguly Bayliyev
Foreign players: allowed in theory, absent in practice
Foreign players are not formally banned in Turkmenistan. In practice, however, none have featured in the domestic league since 2004.
The situation is widely understood to stem from a long-standing emphasis on developing local players. As a result, the league has evolved into a fully domestic environment, with no external competition for places.
Some Turkmen players do hold dual citizenship — including Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian passports — but this has not translated into the presence of foreign footballers within the league itself.
Finances
According to Transfermarkt (excluding unlisted players), the combined squad value across the league stands at €3.4 million.
Arkadag accounts for the overwhelming majority of that figure, with a squad valued at €3 million. The gap to the rest of the league is significant:
- Ahal — €200k
- Nebitchi — €125k
- Altyn Asyr — €50k
- Kopetdag — €25k
Most players in Turkmenistan are not assigned market values at all, largely due to the absence of regular broadcasts of domestic competitions. As a result, these figures should be treated with caution — particularly in the case of clubs like Ahal and Altyn Asyr, which have regularly competed on the continental stage.
It is worth noting that Transfermarkt effectively caps player valuations in Turkmenistan at €200,000. As a result, the league’s most valuable players are:
- Guychmyrat Annagulyyev (Arkadag) — €200k
- Mekan Saparov (Arkadag) — €200k
- Mirza Beknazarov (Arkadag) — €200k
Also among the highest-valued players:
- Yazgylych Gurbanov (Arkadag) — €175k
- Hakmuhammet Bashimov (Ahal) — €150k
- Meylis Diniyev (Arkadag) — €150k
- Altymyrat Annadurdyyev (Arkadag) — €150k
At the same time, most players in the league are not assigned market values at all, largely due to the lack of broadcast coverage and limited visibility of domestic competitions.
Transfers
Paid transfers are virtually non-existent in Turkmenistan.
The most notable moves ahead of the 2026 season included a group transfer of four players led by Elman Tagaev from Ahal to Nebitchi, as well as the transfers of Suleiman Muhadov and Vahyt Orazsakhedov from Altyn Asyr to Ashgabat.
