Muras United will face Lebanon’s Al-Ansar in the AFC Challenge League quarter-finals in Bishkek on Sunday. The tie was initially supposed to be played over two legs, but the format was changed, meaning the semi-final spot will now be decided in a single match.

Al-Ansar do not arrive in ideal condition. The Lebanese league has been suspended since early March, while some of the club’s foreign players only joined the squad during the trip, in Istanbul. On top of that, the team will be without several important first-team players because of injuries. Among those unavailable are Lebanon international defender Mohammed Al-Dhaaini, formerly of Trelleborg, winger Majed Osman, a Brentford academy product, and Nigerian midfielder Abubakar Akuki.
Even so, Al-Ansar still have enough quality and experience to be a dangerous side. Their squad includes Senegalese striker El Hadji Malick Tall, who has been one of the top scorers in Lebanese football in recent years, Palestinian midfielder Mohammad Habous, currently one of the league’s leading assist providers, and Tunisian centre-back Rafik Mednini, around whom much of the defence is built.
Al-Ansar are the most decorated club in Lebanon and have regularly appeared in AFC competitions. In this season’s Challenge League, they reached the knockout stage after finishing second in their group, having beaten Oman’s Al-Seeb. Their squad is valued at €5.43 million, with Tall the club’s most valuable player at €400,000.
Muras United, by contrast, are in full competitive rhythm. The Kyrgyz Premier League is in full swing, and the team sits top of the table with five wins and one draw, heading into the match unbeaten. Under head coach Edmar, Muras have built strong momentum, although they also have their own problems. Key striker Richard Romario, last season’s top scorer, has suffered a serious injury, and the squad lacks another natural centre-forward capable of fully replacing him.
Much of Muras United’s game depends on their foreign contingent. Ukrainian players are present in every line and play an important role. Still, the team’s main driving force is midfielder Erbol Atabaev, who is currently both the club’s top scorer and leading assist provider.
This is Muras United’s first-ever international campaign. The Kyrgyz side entered the Challenge League after a redistribution of slots, but still managed to win their group. The fact that the knockout stage is being played in Kyrgyzstan could also work in their favour.
Muras United’s squad is valued at €4.35 million. Their most expensive player is Atabaev, who is valued at €500,000.
With the tie to be decided over just one match, there will be little room for error. The winner will advance to the semi-finals, where Kuwaiti side Al-Kuwait are already waiting after beating Oman’s Al-Shabab 5–3 in Bishkek.
